The Invisible Journey by Julien Berthier

An artist book by French artist Julien Bertsche.

French artist Thomas Mailender invited Bertsche to stay and work at the Tuba Club in the Calanques National Park south of Marseille in 2021. There, the artist created a work in which an old boat was topped with a rock slab named after the Calanques, sculpted from the same resin as the boat's hull. When the boat was placed on the water and driven, the work blended in with the scenic landscape. The same rock boat was incorporated into various postcards in this work, which has since continued to reflect on the landscape. Intentionally choosing a rough composite technique, Bertsche hand-cut the images of the boats and glued them directly onto the postcards. Thus, his rock boats set sail on a journey through different places and eras, nestled among the travelogues of strangers.
