Dashwood Books

A collection of works by Japanese photographer Yurie Nagashima.

This book is a selection from a slideshow of nearly 700 self-portraits exhibited at the 2017 Tokyo Photographic Art Museum solo exhibition "And a pinch of irony and a little love." Recorded photos. The photography started with black-and-white works from his student days when he was traveling as a backpacker in 1992, and early nude works that triggered recognition as an artist, set-up photographs that convey the atmosphere of Tokyo in the 1990s, and California Institute of the Arts. It continues to the photos taken while studying abroad. At the beginning of the book is a conversation in both Japanese and English with Lesley A. Martin, creative director of the Aperture Foundation.

"After having a baby, I began to focus more on feminist issues in my works, and after the nuclear accident in 2011, I began to pay more attention to the politics of my country. When I was younger, I thought my body was mine and I could use it however I wanted, but when my son was born that idea changed completely. Whether it's a set-up or a snapshot, I think my photography is a very personal work."-Yurie Nagashima
