(Signed) Portrait of J by Takashi Homma
A photobook by Japanese photographer Takashi Homma.
This vast artist’s book presents 111 portraits of Japanese people taken between 2002 and recent years. Paying tribute to figures such as Pritzker Prize–winning architect Arata Isozaki and Takuma Nakahira ― co-founder of the legendary magazine Provoke ― Homma also turns his lens toward a wide spectrum of contemporary subjects across generations, professions, and life experiences.
Carrying an unmistakable clarity and quiet intensity, these portraits invite us to reflect deeply on the faces that shape Japan’s cultural and social fabric today. Over the past forty years, Takashi Homma has produced a wide variety of work, from Tokyo Suburbia (1998) to conceptual explorations of architecture, nature, and urban history. His influence extends far beyond Japan, contributing to global conversations on identity, place, and the evolution of the photobook.
Echoing the legacies of August Sander, Irving Penn, Wolfgang Tillmans, Rineke Dijkstra, and Paul Graham, as well as Japanese predecessors like Shomei Tomatsu, Yoshihiko Ueda, Hiroh Kikai, Issei Suda, and Katsumi Watanabe, Portraits situates itself within a rich tradition of socially engaged portraiture. Homma’s photographs extend that lineage by turning equal attention to cultural icons and anonymous individuals alike.
