(Signed) ENKÖPING by Anders Edström
A photobook by Swedish photographer Anders Edström.
ENKÖPING revisits the earliest photographs Edström ever made—images taken in and around the Swedish town of Enköping shortly after his military service, at the age of 20.
“The photos in this book are the very first ones I ever took. I made them in the small town where I lived after my military service. I had just turned 20. My mother taught me how to develop and print film, and when I saw the first prints come up in the developer, I was hooked. I knew immediately this was what I wanted to do.
I grew up looking at my parents' photos—they were both good amateur photographers—and also at photobooks around the house. So when I began taking pictures, I was already thinking about what photography is. I wanted to do something different from what I’d seen, to be original—even if I didn’t know how. I drove and walked around, just trying things out.
I lived in a boring town where there was nothing, nothing happening, and I thought there was nothing to photograph. But in a way, I was lucky—because I had to make something out of that nothing.”—Anders Edström
