(Signed edition) Transparencies: Small Camera Works 1971-1979 by Stephen Shore
A collection of works by American photographer Stephen Shore.
This book includes previously unpublished work shot on Kodachrome film during the making of Shore's masterpiece, Uncommon Places (1982). While traveling around the United States shooting Uncommon Places, the artist also carried a 35mm Leica. For an artist who mainly used large format cameras, the Leica was an ideal companion, allowing him to express himself directly and instinctively. It was this feeling that attracted the artist to photography as a teenager, and he would later adopt the same approach to large format photography, trying to recreate the directness of images shot on 35mm film.
Years later, when the artist found his Leica photographs, he was astonished by their strange atmosphere. The difference between the aspect ratio of large format and 35mm is like the difference between two musical notes. The photographs taken with the Leica simultaneously depict the ordinary scenes of America and its unique atmosphere, suggesting a world that stretches beyond the frame.
