Wolfgang Tillmans: Things matter, Dinge zählen

Walther König

An artist book by German photographer Wolfgang Tillmans.

Few artists reflect our recent past as directly as Tillmans. Published on the occasion of the exhibition Weltraum at the Albertinum in Dresden, this book reassembles twenty years of work in the midst of historical upheaval, offering a unique attempt at self-reflection from a contemporary perspective.

The volume combines excerpts from the 1987 collection catalogue published in Dresden with the 2003 catalogue titled "If One Thing Matters, Everything Matters," which serves as a notional catalogue raisonné of his early works produced for Tate Britain. In doing so, it situates his long-standing practice within a dialogue between East and West Germany, past and present. Alongside these two out-of-print publications, newly reissued here, the book also includes a conversation in which Tillmans looks back on his beginnings and discusses the aesthetic and social significance of those early years from today’s vantage point.
