Sparkling Past by Klaus Spidel & Benjamin Hugard
A collection of works by artist Benjamin Hugard and art critic Klaus Speidel.
This book is a compilation of preparatory photographs taken by advertising photographer Jean-François de Witte for studio shoots, taken solely to optimize the shots of tasty beer, delicate dishwashers, carefully lit motors, etc. All of these images are either lacking something or having something more than the final shots selected by the advertising agency at the time. But it is in their variety and quality that the author finds critical and poetic potential. Beyond its documentary aspect, this book is a visual and verbal essay that raises deep questions about authorship and the paradoxical relationship between the art world and advertising.
