Providencia by Daniel Reuter

Skinnerboox

A photobook by Luxembourg-born photographer Daniel Reuter.

This book brings together photographs taken between 2016 and 2020 in the district of Providencia, on the outskirts of Santiago de Chile. The term “Providencia” (meaning “divine providence”) refers in the Bible to God’s intervention in the universe—forces beyond human control. Shot in a place that bears this name, the work presents fragmented depictions of architectural details, glass reflections, makeshift constructions, obstructed views, and various figures in the cityscape. Through these images, Reuter attempts to capture the elusive moment of the “present”, suspended between a complex past and an uncertain future. The book’s broad range of imagery and deliberate lack of coherence evoke that very sensation. It also includes a newly written text by Chilean poet and novelist Alejandro Zambra.

First edition of 700 copies.
