Preston Bus Station by Jamie Hawkesworth

Dashwood Books

A collection of works by British photographer Jamie Hawkesworth.

This book includes photographs that Hawksworth took at Preston Bus Station, a bus terminal in London.

Preston Bus Station is a historic Brutalist bus terminal built in 1969 by Arup, an international engineering company based in London. When Hawksworth was a student, he and his photography teacher worked on a project to take portraits of teenagers at Preston Bus Station on weekends and compile them into a newspaper-style publication. However, a few years later, upon hearing that the building was to be demolished, the artist began a new project.

"When I went back to Preston, I decided to shoot at Preston Bus Station every day for a month. The bus terminal is all in one place so I walked around there all day, every day, hoping to see people that caught my eye. I didn't think much of it and just photographed whoever caught my eye. You could also get a Megabus there, so sometimes people would come from the north and pass through Preston to head south, and there were a lot of really interesting people there. When I found someone I thought might be interesting I would ask them to take a portrait, but I tried to be as natural as possible. I photographed all kinds of people, from old people to people with funny hair and kids in funny shoes." - Jamie Hawkesworth
