HIBERNATION by Sander van Wettum
A collection of works by Dutch photographer Sander van Wettum.
Hibernation is a well-known phenomenon in nature, a state in which activity is minimized to adapt to winter conditions. But man-made places can also enter a state of dormancy between dream and reality. Since the Second World War, the construction of large-scale tourist destinations has been continuous. In just half a century, the sun-drenched coastlines of Southern Europe have been transformed into global tourist destinations. As a result, in the agglomeration of overdeveloped beach towns, one can no longer recognize a relationship with the surrounding environment, country or history. And during the winter, these towns go into hibernation: the tourists disappear, the hotels, bars and restaurants close. This work is a journey exploring the off-season state of these places. A journey through surreal architectures, spaces and atmospheres, photographed at the moment when the context of their intended use dissolves and a new reality emerges. Sander van Wettum's photographs invite the viewer to project their stories, memories and dreams onto the ambiguous landscapes, while at the same time showing the harsh and absolute reality of overtourism.
First edition limited to 750 copies.
