Cap Juluca ─ Jeano Edwards

RVB Books

A photobook reframing the image of a Caribbean island through detail, abstraction and a quiet sense of absence.

Cap Juluca is a photobook by Jamaican photographer Jeano Edwards, made at the invitation of Belmond and centred on the hotel of the same name on the island of Anguilla. Rather than recording the destination in conventional travel-photography terms, Edwards deliberately steps back from descriptive views, focusing instead on details and abstract elements that unsettle more familiar images of the island.

The resulting photographs are marked by stillness and mystery. Their absence of human figures gives them an elegant, suspended quality, as though the images had been touched by time and were surfacing as faded memories. Rather than tracing the island’s obvious attractions, Edwards attends to atmosphere and sensation. The book also includes a text by writer Ryan Hart, whose poetic voice lends an additional contemporary resonance to the work.
