Border Documents by Arturo Soto

The Eriskay Connection

An artist book by LA-based Mexican photographer Arturo Soto.

Soto grew up listening to his father’s stories of youth spent in the twin cities of Juárez, Mexico, and El Paso, USA, fascinated by how much had changed in the span of just one generation. Years later, Arturo Soto collected his father’s memories, gave them narrative form, and photographed the places where these events had taken place. Border Documents, a personal archive of everyday occurrences, reveals the intertwining of emotions with public space. Most importantly, the book distinguishes itself from simplified border reportage that focuses solely on drug trafficking, illegal immigration, and corruption-related violence. By allowing the differing temporalities of photographs and text to intersect, Soto creates a vivid account of a region that plays a crucial role in global trade. Moving between the personal and the political, Border Documents recalls the words of critic Edward Soja―that biography is as much about history as it is about geography.
