The Eye is a Lonely Hunter: Images of Humankind
This is an exhibition catalogue published in conjunction with "The Eye Is a Lonely Hunter: Images of Humankind," a photography festival held in three German cities, Mannheim, Ludwigshafen, and Heidelberg, from September 10 to November 11, 2011.
Curated by Katerina Gregos and Solvej Helweg Ovesen, the exhibition brought together 56 artists from 32 countries around the world. It aims to be a photographic investigation of the human condition in the second decade of the 21st century, from multiple geographic angles including Africa, America, Europe and Asia, focusing on new and critical ways in which photography can inform anthropological knowledge. Using a range of lens-based media that reflect the expanded nature of contemporary photography, the artists' work draws on the traditions of documentary, ethnographic and staged photography to critically reflect on the anthropological role of photography today, often taking as its starting point the humanistic perspective in the tradition of documentary photography. What would a portrait of humanity look like in 2011? What are the key issues and challenges facing humanity today, and how are they represented? How does photography generate empathy and evoke emotion?
