Noticeboards of Japan by Olivier Mignon & Nik van der Giesen

Keijiban

*Restock

A collection of works by Belgian curator Olivier Mignon, head of the Kanazawa-based "Keijiban" project, and Dutch photographer and filmmaker Nick van der Giessen, also based in Kanazawa.

This book features photographs of various bulletin boards that the two found, mainly in Kanazawa City. Bulletin boards are so familiar to Japanese people that they are rarely noticed these days. The two authors' humorous and sharp perspective tells a comical story about the strangeness, depth of interest, and the somewhat sadness that permeates these bulletin boards.

"Everywhere in Japan, on every street corner, there are bulletin boards erected on the sidewalks and hanging on the walls. They exist in various, sometimes unexpected, forms. It is no exaggeration to say that their numbers rival those of vending machines. Bulletin boards should attract attention in the first place. And yet most of them exist silently, unnoticed. This is the tragic fate of bulletin boards in modern Japan." - Olivier Mignon (excerpt from the preface of this book)
