Initium Maris by Nicolas Floc'h

Roma Publications

A collection of works by French photographer Nicolas Frock.

Nicolas Flock, a sailor and diver, travels between Paris and Brittany, diving into the coastal waters and capturing the tranquil, surreal and surprisingly organic underwater landscapes he finds there. This photo series, taken between 2015 and 2021 in the waters of western France, from the Brittany coast to the Loire-Atlantique, is structured around the theme of the sea as a paradox: it is both the primordial place where terrestrial life originated, and at the same time a place that is autonomous and continues to exist, taking on other forms and faces. The sea is a place where the distinction between extension and space becomes meaningless, but also a place where traditional standards of measurement collapse, giving way to a materiality in perpetual motion, a space for the proliferation and diversification of life on this planet. In dialogue with scientists, Flock created this work, conscious of his own mission to represent underwater landscapes at a time when climate change is bringing about major changes to ecosystems. The book is accompanied by a text by philosopher Emanuele Coccia.

─ A collection of adventurous works exploring the underwater world, like an unknown planet. Filled with the gentle light shining in from the sea, you will be immersed in this comfortable and tranquil world from the very first page.
