(Imperfect) Cathedral Cars by Thomas Mailaender
A collection of works by French photographer Thomas Mailaender.
"Cathedral Cars" is a colloquial term for the vehicles used by dockworkers at the port of Marseille to cross the route from Marseille to North Africa by boat. In this book, Maillender pays tribute to these "cathedral cars" that defy gravity and embody human achievement in a look that looks like a rope tied to a dream. Reminiscent of famous works of art and sculpture, these cars speak of forthcoming voyages, suggesting migration and exodus from one realm to another. Features of children's picture books, using extra-thick paper and glossy coatings, have been adopted to detach from the original context and make the subject visually unique, almost like a stacking game.
