Research - Progress - Practice #2
"PROVOKE: Provocative Materials for Thought" presented by Nitesha
Dates: June 1st (Sat) – June 23rd (Sun)
Venue: IACK
As the second installment of the "Research - Progress - Practice" series, IACK will be holding a special exhibition by Nikuteisha, a second-hand bookstore that has revived the legendary photography magazine "PROVOKE," which was published in the late 1960s.
Provoke is a fanzine that was conceived in 1968 by art critic Taki Koji and photographer Nakahira Takuma, with poet Okada Takahiko and photographer Takanashi Yutaka joining in. From the second issue, photographer Moriyama Daido also joined as a member, and the magazine published three issues, but disbanded after publishing a final collection in 1970. The magazine's rough grain, unstable compositions due to no viewfinder, and unclear, out-of-focus photographs were derided as "that, blur, out of focus," sparking both positive and negative controversy, and at times making a major impact on its contemporaries that went beyond the boundaries of photography.
IACK's irregularly held "Research - Progress - Practice" series is a project that reinterprets and displays the research and process itself of the exhibitors' work as works that are traces of their thoughts. This will be the third time that Nikutesha has organized an exhibition on Provoke, following exhibitions in Taiwan and Tokyo, and will be held in Kanazawa. During the exhibition, in addition to selling reprints of Provoke, there will also be an exhibition of making-of footage, materials from the production process, photo books and texts published at the time, and an exhibition and sale of vintage prints by Daido Moriyama, one of the artists who participated in Provoke.
On the first day of the exhibition, we will welcome Akira Higashikata, the representative of Nikutesha, as a guest and hold a talk session that will unravel the Provoke reprint and the activities of Nikutesha. While learning about Provoke's ideas and the society of the time through valuable materials and exhibits, please also pay attention to the ideas and activities of Nikutesha through publishing and the curation of old books.
