Laurent began his career as a portrait photographer, working in editorial roles for UK publications such as The Sunday Times, The Guardian and The Independent, before moving into fine art photography in the early 2000s.
In some of the works she has released to date, Laurent has repeatedly visited the locations and subjects to photograph. By incorporating the cycles of seasons, time, and changes in her relationship with her subjects into her images, Laurent attempts to visually express the transience of nature and the immutability that defies human understanding. Furthermore, by putting her works into the form of artist books, Laurent gives viewers a more intimate and thoughtful visual experience. The delicate materials, layout, and colors of the books can be understood as reflecting her quiet observational eye.
IACK's exhibition, Silences, brings together for the first time three artist books that Laurent has produced in the past decade as limited editions with the Brighton, UK-based independent publisher Jane & Jeremy. Through these three artist books, 6 (2011), 54°0′13.176″N 2°32′52.278″W (2017), his latest work Memories of an Unknown Island (2022), and the video work 54°0′13.176″N 2°32′52.278″W, Laurent explores the human condition and the natural world, questioning concepts such as ecology, femininity, change and constancy.
We are also planning to hold an event inviting the artist on the final day of the exhibition. Please take this opportunity to come and see the works.
