Der Sonnenstich by Katinka Bock
A collection of works by Katinka Bock, a German artist based in Paris and Berlin.
This book was published in conjunction with Bock's solo exhibition at the Pernod Ricard Foundation in Paris from February 14 to April 29, 2023. This is the first exhibition to focus on her photography, known for her sculptures, and of the approximately 65 works on display, this book includes 55 reproductions of photographs taken with old analog cameras between 2015 and 2023. The photographs, created in the family, city or nature, represent Bock's "sculptural" perspective on objects, spaces, bodies and living things. She draws inspiration for her images from observing the specificity of various forms and relationships, and, like her sculptures, she quickly captures the vitality of the world and liberates her images from the control of meaning and intention. Paradoxically, the use of old analog cameras, which take time to shoot and process, is an important element in maintaining the dynamism of that liberation. The title "Der Sonnenstich" means "sunstroke" in German, and "Sonne" and "Stich" literally translate to "thorns of the sun." The phrase, taken from a story written by her grandfather and repeated in her own recent poetry, intrigued her because of its reference to sun and light. For Bok, "the thorn of the sun" is a substitute for "photography," and responds more specifically to various terms related to the history of photography, from William Henry Fox Talbot's "The Pencil of Nature" to Roland Barthes' "punctum."
