Multiples, Inc. 1965-1992

Marian Goodman Gallery/Walther König

A collection of works published in conjunction with the exhibition "MULTIPLES, INC. Artists & Photographs" held at the Marian Goodman Gallery in New York.

Multiples, Inc. is an art publishing company founded in 1965 by five people, including Marian Goodman, who currently runs Marian Goodman Gallery as a gallerist. For nearly 30 years before it disbanded in 1992, it continued to have a major impact on the art world, publishing editions of the most important artists of the 20th century.

The 1960s was the age of multiple works. A work of art was not supposed to be one-of-a-kind, but multiple editions made using new materials and modern manufacturing techniques. Publishing editions enabled the low-cost and democratic distribution of works of art, allowing a wider audience to hear what was happening in the art world. Not all of the many publishers that emerged from the United States and Europe in the 1960s continued their activities over the long term, but "Multiples, Inc." survived the rise of new media and continued to grow in the 1970s and 1980s. Produced many editions. This book contains a complete list of all editions published by Multiples, Inc., plus numerous materials that illustrate its long history. Editing and text by Swiss curator Dieter Schwarz.
