L'Isola by Vittorio Mortarotti and Anush Hamzehian

Skinnerboox

A collection of works by Turin-based photographer Vittorio Mortarotti and Paris-based filmmaker Anush Hamzehian.

"L'Isola" presents sound installations, audio/video installations, and through two volumes of the "Dunammunui (Yonaguni) - English" dictionary and this book, Yonaguni Island, the westernmost island of Japan. A project to document languages and cultures that are in danger of disappearing.

According to the Atlas of the World's Languages in Danger, a linguistic map created by UNESCO in 2010, 250 languages have disappeared in the last 50 years. 3000 languages are in danger of extinction. The disappearance of a language means the loss of the precise knowledge of plants, animals, diseases, religions, etc. that the language has named over the centuries. And it means that not only language and knowledge, but also the vision of the world and concepts that they have seen will disappear forever.

There are currently more than 1,000 people living on Yonaguni Island, but almost no one speaks the local language, Dunammunui. Dunammunui is a "Severely Endangered Language" and will surely be forgotten in a few years. Through this project, Motorroty and Hamzehien attempt to archive the last images, last sounds, and final glimpses of a vanishing community.
