New Gaze by Takuma Nakahira

晶文社

Photobook by Japanese photographer Takuma Nakahira.

Takuma Nakahira published "For the Coming Words" in 1970, "Why a Botanical Dictionary?" in 1973, and other significant books and images after Provoke's dissolution, but in 1977, while attending a party at his house, he passed out from acute alcohol poisoning. Upon awakening, Nakahira had lost most of his memory and language. This book is the first photobook produced since then and the first collection of his work that gives a sense of the full-fledged practice of the philosophy described in "Why Botanical Illustrated Books? Although at this time his work still includes black-and-white photographs, unlike "For the Coming Words," the motifs can be clearly identified throughout the book by using a tripod to prevent blurring even at night. Having rejected the poetic element, Nakahira had stepped into the unseen radicality of photography at that time.
