Spector Books

A collection of works by Japanese photographer Seiichi Furuya.

This book was published in conjunction with the solo exhibition "Wo die Wahrheit liegt" held at the Heidelberger Kunstfairrein in Doyle from August 30th to November 2nd, 2014. In 1983, Furuya created a portfolio of photographs of the borders of Austria and Eastern European countries taken between 1981 and 1983, "Borders 1981 - 1983" Part 1. The sequel was never produced, but after 30 years, the project was finally put to an end and published as a book. For Furuya, who was born in Japan, where borders are naturally defined by the sea, the fact that borders run through the middle of the country and separate people, cultures and ideologies was a very interesting fact. As the world focused on the border between East and West Germany, Furuya took up the border areas with Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia to create a political and personal document of contemporary history. Guided by interplay between personal and political elements, personal opinions and discrepancies in archival material, Furuya connects places and stories to create archival material of historical value.
