The Saxons of Transylvania by Pascual Martínez + Vincent Sáez

Overlapse

A collection of works by Spanish photographer duo Pascual Martínez and Vincent Sáez.

According to legend, in the middle of the 12th century, the Pied Piper came to Hamelin's German Town and kidnapped local children. They disappeared into the mountains and traveled underground until they emerged from the seven-cities caverns of Transylvania where they were supposedly settled. The story is believed to have been influenced by the colonization of Central European territories by King Geza II of Hungary, who brought German youths to Transylvania to fortify the border towns. The skilled Saxons then built a productive society on the land, where generations lived peacefully with the Hungarians, Romanians and Romans, nurturing their identity.

However, as a result of the wars of the 20th century and the oppression of the communist regime, there are now very few Saxons left in Transylvania. Their history and heritage are in danger of being completely wiped out.

Today, some of those who left Romania are returning home in search of their roots and working to preserve their legacy. This book focuses on stories about the identity, memories, traditions and life experiences of the last Saxons.
