For over 30 years, John and Mary Phillips have worked together in Sudan, Libya, Oman, Jordan and Cyprus. During that time, the two witnessed the decline of the British Empire in which they had grown up and cultivated all the values. Federico Clavallino took letters, photographs, documents and memoirs from his grandparents and used them as guides for his filming in Oman, Jordan, Sudan and England. In order to imitate the process of unconscious, selective, and associative recollection, this work recomposes photographs taken by the artist himself, texts excerpted from conversations, and materials owned by his grandparents. It refers to the formation of collective memory. It is an attempt to dismantle the familial narratives ingrained in colonial discourse, and by trapping images of the past in a dialectical relationship with those of the present day, the empire is a ghostly entity, or inherited. The book is a non-fiction book that covers the lives of European migrant workers, but the interviews by two men did not include the Muslim women. Van Manen felt that this was the subject he should tackle himself, and so he began creating the series Vrouwen te Gast. Van Manen photographed wives and women migrants from Turkey, Italy, Spain, Morocco, Yugoslavia, Tunisia, Portugal, and Greece, as they struggled to survive in a foreign culture at home, at work, at parties, and during leisure activities. This work was later published as van Manen's first photo book by feminist publisher Sara in Amsterdam, and it inspired van Manen to start a Dutch language course for migrant women in the area and to have them interact with the local residents.

In 2024, van Manen revisited her own photographs and texts, adding newly discovered photographs from her archive and new texts to complete I Am The Only Woman There.

-

Title: I am the only woman there
Artist: Bertien van Manen
Fw: Books, 2024
Linen hardcover
229 x 174 mm
160 pages
Text in English
First edition
ISBN: 9789083451008
¥7,040 -

<tc>
A photobook exploring Belmond’s Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons through fantasy, theatricality and a heightened attention to light.

Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons is a photobook by French photographer Thomas Rousset, produced as part of Belmond’s ongoing collaboration with leading contemporary photographers. Through Rousset’s distinctive approach, the book explores the special atmosphere of Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire, England, revealing a place suspended somewhere between historical reality and staged fiction.

Set within a fifteenth-century manor house, the images draw on two distinct sources: an imagined aristocratic English way of life, and the unreal, fantastical qualities of rural life found in old British cinema. Blending fiction and subjective storytelling with research-based methods, she repeatedly develops unexpected visual languages through which social dynamics and human relationships come into view. It was conceived after Kono found, while looking back over photographs made in recent years, that many of the things depicted were already no longer in his possession. What he sought to make, however, was not a catalogue of lost objects. The texts are not presented as captions explaining the photographs, nor is there any fixed correspondence between image and word. Through its distinctive layout, the book allows images to arise from the space between them—appearing briefly as each page is turned, then receding again.

As the title suggests, the book’s gaze is directed not toward nostalgia for what was once there, but toward what comes after loss. In this sense, it also functions as a quiet homage to Shuntaro Tanikawa’s poem “Sono ato” (2013). Unnoticed, we let go of many things while at the same time taking hold of something new. The choice of paper, which visibly changes over time, resonates deeply with this theme. Fragmentary images — including blank exposures made while advancing the film, fallen negatives, and reproductions of posters and television screens — surge through the pages with overwhelming intensity. The result is an extraordinary work that seems to give photographic form to a world in which everything has already been reduced to images. At the end of the book is an important conversation between Moriyama and his friend and rival, Takuma Nakahira.

As Moriyama later recalled: “We used film in those days, so you would first take a blank shot. The image would suddenly appear, and that is also a photograph. I also picked up things that Nakahira had thrown away in the darkroom. I gathered all those things and made this. For better or worse, it was excessive. There was almost no reaction at the time. It was like, what is this? Some people said it was just design, others that it was photographic suicide. Only Araki (Nobuyoshi) said he was jealous.”

—

Title: Farewell Photography
Artist: Daido Moriyama
Publisher: Shashin-Hyōron-Sha, 1972
Format: Softcover with dust-jacket, perfect binding
Size: 230 × 185 × 21 mm
Pages: 308
Language: Japanese
Edition: First edition

Condition: Very good
</tc>
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0565/9115/5409/files/farewell-cover_6652a681-fd10-401b-ab16-82f7aa5f280c.jpg?v=1771257936
le-luxe-by-roe-ethridge-1
<tc>Le Luxe ─ Roe Ethridge</tc>
<tc>
A photobook surveying a decade of Roe Ethridge’s image-making through a restless coexistence of the personal, the commercial and the unfinished.

Le Luxe is a photobook by American artist Roe Ethridge. Taking its title from the ironic French expression C’est pas du luxe (“it’s not a luxury”), the book turns on a paradox central to Ethridge’s practice: that luxury may be superfluous by nature and yet somehow indispensable to life. Encompassing a decade of work without assuming the weight of a conventional retrospective, the book moves between private snapshots, magazine commissions and online screenshots, drawing heterogeneous images into a structure that continues Ethridge’s investigation into image production while resisting the very idea of a definitively “finished” work. The clean, perfected conditions often associated with photography are further unsettled through the book’s material construction, recalling Henri Matisse’s warning that “exactness is not truth.”

Structured in three parts, Le Luxe also weaves the artist’s daily life into its singular backdrop. Between November 2005 and January 2010, Ethridge was engaged in a long-term commission to photograph a building in central Manhattan adjacent to the World Trade Center, and this thread runs through the book in uneasy balance with the fissures opened up between analogue and digital, certainty and doubt. Featured in The Photobook: A History, Volume III, the publication remains one of the clearest expressions of Ethridge’s singular ability to let disparate image worlds coexist without resolution.

Book Review
From Subsumption to Coexistence—Roe Ethridge’s Le Luxe
by Yukihito Kono

—

Title: Le Luxe
Artist: Roe Ethridge
Publisher: MACK, September 2012
Format: Embossed hardcover
Size: 250 × 285 mm
Pages: 206
Language: English
Edition: Second edition
ISBN: 978-1-907946-08-0
</tc>
//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0565/9115/5409/collections/picture_pc_b4f63e1ed36ad0446d973ec426b75e87.jpg?v=1629526234
https://www.iack.online/en/collections/iack%e5%ae%9a%e7%95%aa%e3%82%bf%e3%82%a4%e3%83%88%e3%83%ab-iack-classics/%e3%82%b5%e3%83%96%e3%82%ab%e3%83%ab%e3%83%81%e3%83%a3%e3%83%bc-subculture+%e7%a4%be%e4%bc%9a-social-issues.oembed
