本書は、コンクリート・ポエトリーの革新的なムーブメントの初期段階に、女性アーティストたちによって書かれた作品に焦点を当てた壮大な撰集である。デザイナーのアレックス・バルジュー(Alex Balgiu)と詩人のモーニカ・デ・ラ・トーレ(M?nicade la Torre)によって、ヨーロッパ、日本、ラテンアメリカ、アメリカから50名のアーティストがキュレーションされている。

『?Women in Concrete Poetry:1959-1979』の制作は、イタリアのフェミニスト・アーティスト、ミレラ・ベンティヴォリオ(Mirella Bentivoglio)が1978年にヴェネツィア・ビエンナーレのために企画した、女性による視覚的で具体的な詩の画期的な展覧会「Materializzazione del linguaggio」がきっかけとなった。?この展覧会やその他の作品を通して、ベンティヴォリオは言語と視覚が交差する領域で制作を行う女性アーティストの軌跡を辿った。彼らはジャンルや性別の慣習、家父長制や規範的構文の制約から言葉を解放し、「萎縮したコミュニケーション手段を再び活性化」しようとしていた。

本書に収録された作品は、オイヴィント・ファールシュトレーム(?yvind Fahlstr?m)、オイゲン・ゴムリンガー(Eugen Gomringer)、ブラジルのノイガンドレス派が基本宣言で定義した具体的な詩の表現から発展したものである。?いくつかの作品は、メアリー・エレン・ソルト(Mary Ellen Solt)とエメット・ウィリアムズ(Emmett Williams)が60年代後半に編集した正典ともいえる著作に記録されているようなコンクリート・ポエトリーとして容易に認識されるが、それはまた明らかにフェミニズムの要素をも供えており、しばしば判読しにくい拡張的な連続作品であることが特徴である。
